From March 30 to 31, 2015, Guangdong Times Museum, in cooperation with the Cultural and Education Section of British Embassy and Guangzhou Tram Co., Ltd., brought to the public a series of poetic tram works by the British artistic group Circumstance: "Sitting till Moving: Times Museum Art on Track," thus raising the curtain on the 2015 UK-China Year of Cultural Exchange projects in southern China.

One who has lived in the city for a long time will easily be tempted to ignore the wonder of the delicacies that surround us. Thus, in response, this Saturday the Guangdong Times Museum will invite passengers to take the tram from Wanshengwei to Canton Tower, allowing contemporary art to emerge through movement.

As the tram runs along the Pearl River, passengers can catch a glimpse of Guangzhou through the windows. For them, the world outside the tram is quiet; they cannot hear the constant buzz of the city outside. When the tram passes residential towers, parks and docks, passengers can capture snapshots of different spaces in the city. Myriad images of life--like gleaming fragments of urban life--are demonstrated in those snapshots, intertwining countless stories of experience in the moment.

The particular sound experience on the Guangzhou tram is presented by the British artistic group Circumstance. In this work, a highly original musical arrangement conveys a touching story about life within the city; and with its encouragement, the passengers soon realize they have become characters in the story.

Museum, using GPS (Global Positioning System) technology, tracks the route of the tram, and as the scenery changes the sound experience changes too. When passengers tour the city in the tram, it's as if they can hear the wonderful world on the other side of the windows. The feelings encouraged are their own poetic response to the world, as if they were appreciating a movie describing urban life in Guangzhou, with all its cinematic delicacy.

A primary objective of 2015 UK-China Year of Cultural Exchange is to promote bold, creative cultural cooperation between the two nations. The unique sound-experience project, created through the cooperation of Circumstance, Guangdong Times Museum and Guangzhou Tram, features the combination of creative ideas, music, scenery, public transportation and buildings, which will not only offer passengers a brand-new travel experience but will also serve as a model for the success of future creative efforts.

 

A platform for production and exchanges of contemporary art

Guangdong Times Museum, which was established by Guangzhou Times Property Group, is located in Times Deconstruction Phase III, at No. 151 Huangbianbei Road, Baiyun District, Guanghzou. The prominent architectural designer Rem Koolhaas was invited to design a conceptual permanent building for Times Museum, which was subsequently completed in September 2010. Registered as a nonprofit public facility, Guangdong Times Museum opened its doors to the public in October of that year.

Times Museum has thus been committed to the research and exhibition of contemporary art and related cultural ideas as well as to the encouragement of local, public and interdisciplinary art practice and cultural production. As a representative contemporary art gallery, Guangdong Times Museum is more than simply a venue for exhibition. It is also a space for the encouragement of artistic expression. It's an active community cultural center and an environment for the promotion of artistic development in the region. It's a new type of organization whose facilities and personnel make it possible for audiences to experience art through exhibitions and productions. It's a base in which artists can gather, exchange ideas and acquire support for the completion of their works. Moreover, it's a research center and think-tank.

Guangdong Times Museum, by initiating a series of exhibitions, projects and public cultural activities, progressively integrates the research, exhibition, exchange and education of art and culture with the community.
