"Para-curatoral" Seminar Staged at Times Museum

The "Para-curatorial" series is a voluntarily developed platform for education and exchanges by the Guangdong Times Museum. Taking the annual seminar and relevant journals as the main communication channel, the platform places contemporary art in a broad context of politics, economy and culture. "Para-curatorial" defines the practice of curators as a multidisciplinary mode and approach towards thinking, research, space practice and knowledge exchange, which includes but is not limited to the production of exhibitions. Regarded as a combination of community center, lab and temporary academy, the art museum has become a place to catalyze the interchange between contemporary arts and the knowledge and practice in other areas.

"Between Known and Unknown: Research in-and-through Art", the forth project of the Para-curatorial Series that started from 24th September, focused on the change of the artists' practice. The seminar probed into the nature of "research-based practice" and the possible future it would incur. How have artists, curators and researchers integrated social and scientific motives with aesthetics, and how have they developed inquiries to create forms that address the critical and creative processes? Since most research-based projects are responsive to their respective social situations or contexts, the seminar also set its premise in relation to the critical perspectives of the curatorial by probing into how the curatorial can better facilitate and accommodate the creative and critical thinking manifested in research-based projects, and make these projects more clearly addressed and accessed.

The Para-curatorial Seminar has become an iconic program for academic research after four years of successful operation. It has been an attraction to the domestic as well as foreign curators and artists. As an art institute that is still very young in China, Times Museum is committed to probing and showcasing the multi-disciplinary connections and possibilities of contemporary art and the institute itself.
