"The Hinterland Project", produced by Sun Dongdong and Liang Jianhua, was no like any other solo exhibitions staged in the art museums. Seeing the production of space as the pressing mission of art today, Shi Qing, the leading artist of this project, joined hands with his peers and completed the exhibition that consisted of over ten sub-projects. In this project, the artists circumvented the criticism of the artistic mechanism. Instead, they started with the very basic subject of space production - the geographic location and the space. The final product of their efforts showcased to the audience not only the art but also the newly established relationships among different people and different places. Therefore, the "hinterland" has been given a connotation beyond geographic concept, but a new approach and new identification.

Times Museum, an institute embedded in a residential complex, provides the venue that accommodates the view of the exhibition. We hope that this project could provide some insight for the art museum living in the community on how to realize the co-existence with the surrounding environment while adhering to its pursuit of art.
